The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located with the Catron County section of the forest. The surroundings today probably look very much like they did when the cliff dwellings were inhabited. Contributions are tax deductible. Part of the forest, the Gila Wilderness, was established in 1924 as the first designated wilderness reservation by the U.S. federal government. Gila is home to namesake wildlife that includes the Gila monster, Gila trout, Gila topminnow, several members of the Gila (western chub) genus, and the Gila woodpecker.

Boasting some of the darkest nights in the Southwest, the Gila National Forest offers many visitors the chance to view and admire the natural night sky. These activities include the cutting of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree, personal Christmas tree cutting, the cutting of personal use forest products such as vigas and latillas, special product collection by tribes for ceremonial purposes, and the cutting of certain hazard trees.
