When I first started at Northwest High School, I was intimidated. The theatre program is top notch, as is the music. There are still a lot of things that the school needs to work on, such as greater diversity and art culture, but the administration is very receptive to the feelings of our students and has addressed them constructively. My son started this year as a freshman and is having an amazing time-- being challenged in his honors classes, and trying so many different clubs, from Model UN, to Chess team, to a cappella to Chamber Singers, to writing for science and humanities publications. The sincere approach to help diversify the classroom has been successful. The vision, execution, and evolution of the model is spot on. So they get interest in learning new things. The school is making adjustments to create more balance for students, and has been extremely supportive during the pandemic. Many of the educators are specialists in their fields which allows for in-depth lectures and a true passion for each subject being taught. I am currently attending my #1 college (thanks to college counseling) and Flintridge focused on finding all of my classmates a college that fit us and wasn’t necessarily based on rank. Nearby Royal Oak Schools scores lower, with a rating of 7.
While it has always been an academic powerhouse, it is also a school that encourages all of it's students to be creative and unique individuals, while learning to embrace Brearley's core values of "honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility and courage." Poly has the unique benefit of hosting three schools on two campuses which allows for collaboration across age groups. I watched the self-doubt become controlled and I saw a true leader develop. Dorr is one of my favorite parts of hm and I always look forward to going there! With sixty girls in one grade, it would seem that competition would be prevalent, especially during the college process. Please.
