In 2017 Grayson Perry, one of the most astute commentators on contemporary society and culture, presented a major exhibition of new work. Perry talks openly and unabashedly about his own life, and his work contains a strong autobiographical element as well. While there, neighbours and friends enjoyed free entry to the Art Gallery. His show at Kiasma consists of classical ceramic pots and large tapestries on unexpected subjects: Brexit, aesthetic tastes and masculine ideals, as well as the artist’s personal life.

Exhibition visitors are invited to support The Windsor Charitable Foundation with a suggested donation of $10. His work tackles subjects that are universally human: gender, social status, sexuality, religion. In the past five years alone Art Fund has given £34 million to help museums and galleries acquire works of art for their collections. Thanks to Grayson Perry for inspiration, to all at Manna House for living and breathing this project for several months, to all the wonderful artists who contributed to this project, to Shannon Quigley whose great idea this was originally, to Lakeland Arts for believing this was a project worth exploring, and especially to Donna Campbell whose patience and talent are gifts she generously shares with us. As part of a nationwide tour, the exhibition is currently on show at The Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead. Kiasma-blog, Photo: Finnish National Gallery / Pirje Mykkänen. Covered with sgraffito drawings, handwritten and stencilled texts, photographic transfers and rich glazes, Perry’s detailed pots are deeply alluring. He uses the seductive qualities of ceramics and other art forms to communicate his thoughts on society. His female alter ego Claire and his childhood teddy bear Alan Measles appear in many of his works. The Vanity of Small Differences, Perry’s monumental suite of tapestries exploring the subject of taste in contemporary Britain, was first shown at Victoria Miro, London, in 2012 and was acquired by The Arts Council Collection and British Council and has subsequently toured throughout the UK and Europe. The exhibition at Kiasma comprises nearly fifty works.
